#AfricanChildDay: Senate moves to ensure full implementation of Child Rights


The senate on Thursday called for full implementation of the child right act 2003 and the Universal Basic Education act of 2004 to ensure that the rights and welfare of children and their compulsory education rights are upheld.

This preceded a motion titled 2016 International Day of the African Child Conflict and Crisis in Africa: Protecting all Children’s Rights sponsored by Oluremi Tinubu and 8 other lawmakers.

 In remembering this day set aside to draw attention to the lives of African children the law makers resolved to urge the federal government to key into the sustainable development goals, SDGs.

They further urged the Federal and state government to ensure implementation of the UBE Act and Child Rights Acts in all states and make provisions for budgetary allocations for programme that will benefit children’s nutrition and education in the relevant ministries.

Senate president Bukola Saraki in his remarks thanked the sponsors and contributors of the motion and pledged the determination of the 8th senate to protect the interest of the Nigerian child.

“We cannot emphasize enough the importance of the child, the issue of education there must be penalty for those who deprive these children education secondly is the issue of child rights we have to ensure that this is adopted in all the states, who are yet to do so, we also have to do our parts in the 8th senate to ensure that this rights are upheld and the children are protected.
